If you qualify for the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP), finding a dentist can feel like the easy part. Many practices say they accept it. The harder part is finding one who explains it in plain language, so you are never surprised by a bill. For South Surrey and White Rock families, a few well-chosen questions make that choice much simpler.

Why "we accept CDCP" is not enough

In a review of 32 practice websites across four provinces, 30 said clearly that they accept CDCP. But far fewer explained the details that affect you. Only 11 promised to tell you your cost before treatment, and only 14 said they bill Sun Life directly. Only three practices explained all seven topics below.

That gap is useful to know about. It means a short conversation, by phone or on a practice's website, can tell you a lot about how supported you will feel.

Seven questions to ask before you book

  1. Do you accept CDCP, and are you taking new patients? In the review, 30 of 32 practices said they accept CDCP, but only 18 said they welcome new patients.
  2. Do you bill Sun Life directly? If the office does it, you pay only your portion and skip the claim forms. Only 14 of 32 said they do.
  3. Who qualifies? The Government of Canada decides eligibility, so a good office points you to where you can confirm yours. 22 of 32 explained this.
  4. Will CDCP cover the whole bill? It may not. 23 of 32 explained that.
  5. Will you give me my cost before treatment? This is the question that prevents surprises. Only 11 of 32 promised it.
  6. How does CDCP work with private insurance? You usually can't have both. 17 of 32 explained how the two fit together.
  7. Can I get appointments that suit my schedule? Evening, Saturday and parking options matter when you are juggling work and family.

Understanding your portion

Your share of the cost under CDCP depends on family income:

Family incomeYou pay
Under $70,0000%, CDCP covers its full fee
$70,000 to $79,99940%
$80,000 to $89,99960%

There are also two fee guides, and the difference between them is part of what you pay. A dentist who explains this before treatment begins is helping you plan, not just process a claim.

What a reassuring first call sounds like

A good office will answer these questions without hurrying you. They will tell you what to bring, where to confirm eligibility, and what your portion is likely to be before any work starts. If you feel rushed or the answers are vague, it is fine to keep looking.

The results behind these numbers are in our write-up, how 32 CDCP practices compare, if you would like the full picture.

Where to go next

Once you have a short list, look at what else each practice offers your household. Many families want one office for checkups, children's care and later treatments. You can see how one local team approaches CDCP patients, Tuesday evening and Saturday visits, and free parking on the main website.

Choosing a dentist is personal. Ask the seven questions, listen for clear and kind answers, and choose the office that makes your costs and next steps easy to understand.
